Odoo is a modular business software that bundles sales, warehouse, purchasing, accounting and other areas in one system and serves as ERP in many businesses. Whoever uses Odoo in the background and needs a powerful shop in the foreground does not want to keep orders and stock twice. This page describes how we implement Magento Odoo, how it works technically and where the pitfalls lie.

An overview of the ways (API, middleware, file exchange, ready-made module) is given by the guide to ERP integration. Which type of system is meant for what is explained by the guide merchandise management, ERP and PIM. For larger ERP systems read the page on Business Central or on SAP integration, for the other systems the overview of connectors. The guide connect Odoo to Magento shows when the integration pays off.

01

Odoo at a glance: what the system means for the shop

Odoo consists of applications that you can add one by one: sales, warehouse, purchasing, invoices, customer management and others. Article master, stock, customers and orders lie here, and deliveries and invoices are processed from here. Because every business uses different applications, two Odoo systems often look very different.

For Magento Odoo that means: the shop becomes a sales channel of the ERP. Articles, prices and stock come from Odoo into the shop, orders and new customers go from the shop into Odoo, and delivery and invoice status come back. The advantage is obvious: your employees keep working in Odoo and do not have to enter orders anew.

Odoo has its own online shop. That is an honest question before every project: if the shop of Odoo is enough for your business, connecting a second shop is unnecessary. Magento Odoo pays off if the shop has to do more, for example with a large range, B2B prices, several languages and countries or special processes in the checkout. We discuss this openly in the inventory.

Since Odoo is often heavily customized, the implementation depends on your setup: which applications run, which fields and processes were added, whether Odoo is self-hosted or runs as a service. We clarify exactly such peculiarities before we promise anything.

02

What Magento Odoo synchronizes between shop and system

Which data flows in Magento Odoo you define with us in the inventory. Typically there are five areas.

Articles and prices

Released articles with variants, attributes and prices go from Odoo into the shop. We take over price lists as far as Magento can map them through customer groups and tier prices.

Stock

The stock comes from Odoo and is shown in the shop. With several warehouses we decide with you which warehouses form the salable stock in the shop.

Orders

Every order is created as a sales order in Odoo, with items, shipping method, payment method and addresses. An order is transferred only once, even if the connection is interrupted.

Customers

New customers are created in Odoo as contacts and assigned unambiguously. We avoid duplicate contacts through clear rules for the comparison.

Delivery and invoices

Tracking numbers, delivery status and invoices go back into the shop so that customers see in the account where their order stands.

Not every Magento Odoo project needs all five areas. Often it begins with orders and stock and later grows by article maintenance and documents. This way you see results quickly and can use the budget in stages.

03

The data flows of Magento Odoo at a glance

The table shows a typical pattern. In your business it may differ, and that is exactly what we clarify in the inventory.

DataLeading systemDirectionTypical rhythm
Article master and variantsOdooOdoo to shopregularly or on change
Prices and price listsOdooOdoo to shopregularly or on change
StockOdooOdoo to shopoften, depending on need
OrdersShopShop to Odooimmediately or at short intervals
New customersdepending on conceptShop to Odooon creation
Delivery status and invoicesOdooOdoo to shopon status change

With Magento Odoo a clear rule on data ownership prevents most disputes. Whatever can be changed in both systems leads to contradictions sooner or later. That is why we define exactly one leading system per type of data and describe the rule for the conflict case. Especially with variants, units and tax rates an assignment table that the department and the developers review together is worthwhile.

04

The interfaces of Odoo: what is technically available

For Magento Odoo, Odoo offers an external programming interface with which records can be read, created and changed. According to the documentation of the vendor, the older interfaces based on XML-RPC and JSON-RPC are marked as deprecated from version 19 and announced for removal in version 20 in autumn 2026. The documentation names the new interface JSON-2 as the successor.

That has a practical consequence: we plan an integration on the newer interface from the start or build it so that the interface can be exchanged. Which Odoo version you use and which interface is available there we check before the quote. According to the documentation, access through the external interface also depends on the plan: with the service of Odoo itself it is included only in certain plans. With your own operation this restriction does not apply.

We avoid direct access to the database wherever possible. It bypasses the rules and permissions of Odoo and can break on updates. If an interface is not enough, we first look for an official way before we build a makeshift.

05

Ready-made module, middleware or individual development for Magento Odoo

For the connection of Odoo and Magento, third-party vendors offer connector modules. We did not find an official Magento module from the vendor in our research. Whether a third-party product fits your process we check honestly before a decision, also with regard to Odoo version and maintenance state. If an existing product covers your requirements, it is often the more economical choice, and we will tell you so.

An individual development for Magento Odoo pays off if your processes deviate from the standard, which happens often with Odoo because of the many customizations: own fields, special price rules, several warehouses or processes that a ready-made product does not know. It is more expensive at the start but fits exactly. Include the care as well: a ready-made product saves development time but causes license and update costs, and an individual development needs someone who looks after it.

A middleware pays off if more than two systems are connected, for example shop, ERP, marketplace connection and shipping provider. The decision aid is in the guide to ERP integration.

06

The Magento side: how Magento Odoo is implemented in the shop

On the Magento side we build the integration as its own module according to the standards of the system, without interventions in the core. The module uses the interfaces and queues of Magento so that transfers run in the background and the shop does not become slower for visitors. Orders are placed in a queue on arrival and processed there until the ERP has confirmed them.

Prices by customer group, tier prices and several warehouses are mapped by Magento with its own functions that the integration fills. Where possible we use these standard functions instead of inventing our own tables. That keeps the shop update-capable and lets other developers join in later.

In the admin you see what was transferred: a log shows date, record and result, with a filter for errors. For the peculiarities of Odoo we add settings in the admin, for example assignments of payment methods, shipping methods and tax classes, so that changes need no development.

With Odoo there is a peculiarity: the system brings its own online shop. Magento Odoo is therefore meant for businesses that use Odoo as ERP and need the strengths of Magento in the shop, for example many products, B2B prices or several languages and countries.

07

Typical pitfalls with Magento Odoo

We see these points again and again in projects. They can be planned if they are known early.

  • Outdated interface

The integration uses an interface that is dropped in a new Odoo version and breaks on the version change.

  • Own fields and modules

Customized fields or processes in Odoo are missing in the concept and lead to wrong or missing data.

  • Double shop

The shop of Odoo and Magento run in parallel, and nobody knows which stock and prices apply.

  • Unclear data ownership

Prices or texts are changed in both systems and overwrite each other.

  • Missing monitoring

A failed transfer is noticed only after days because nobody looks at the log.

  • Special cases

Partial deliveries, returns, credit notes and foreign orders are missing in the concept.

An integration for Magento Odoo should also withstand short outages of the system: transfers are buffered and caught up later instead of being lost. That increases reliability in daily work considerably and is standard with us.

Security and data protection with Magento Odoo

An integration connects two systems with business data, so clear rules apply. The exchange runs encrypted, credentials do not lie in the source code but in the protected configuration, and the integration receives only the rights it needs. Access belongs to a separate service account, never to a private account of a person.

When testing we work with test data or anonymized data as far as possible. As soon as developers get access to personal data, for example customer accounts or orders from Odoo, an agreement on commissioned data processing is needed. We clarify that before the start so that you are legally well set up.

The log of the integration contains what is necessary for operation but no credentials and no unnecessary personal data. Retention periods are defined with you. These notes are not legal advice, the concrete arrangement depends on your company.

09

How a project for Magento Odoo runs

We keep the start deliberately short so that you quickly know whether and how the integration is feasible.

01

Inventory

We clarify version, operation, access and contacts at Odoo, the desired data flows and the special cases. The result is a short concept.

02

Test environment

We work against a test system of Odoo and a Magento development state, never first against live data.

03

Implementation

The data flows are built one by one, with a log, repetition on errors and clear rules for conflicts.

04

Test and start

You check with real examples, then we start step by step and look at the log together in the first weeks.

Also with Magento Odoo you stay informed between the steps: you receive a short status of what is done, what comes next and where we need your decision. We record decisions in writing so that it stays traceable later why something was built this way.

10

Three typical constellations (examples, not customer references)

The following constellations are examples from the practice of Magento Odoo projects, not statements about particular customers. The first is a business that uses Odoo for warehouse, purchasing and invoices and needs a shop with its own prices and customer accounts for selling to business customers. Odoo remains the center, Magento takes over the presentation and the checkout.

The second constellation is a merchant with a large range and many variants. The challenge lies in the assignment of attributes and variants between Odoo and Magento and in which texts and images are maintained where. We define early what stays in Odoo and what arises in the shop.

The third constellation is a business that switches from another shop system to Magento and keeps Odoo. Here the existing connection is the benchmark: what it achieves today the new shop should at least achieve. How the switch itself runs is described on our page on migration.

11

Operation, monitoring and care of Magento Odoo after the start

An interface is not a one-off project but ongoing operation. After the start a log monitors every transfer: what was transferred when, what failed, what is repeated? Errors that cannot be fixed automatically are reported visibly so that nobody learns of them only through a customer complaint.

Updates change the situation. A Magento update, a new state at Odoo or a change of the vendor interface can affect the integration. Therefore the planning includes an agreement on how updates are tested and who approves them. Ongoing care can be regulated through a maintenance contract that covers monitoring, updates and error fixing.

Documentation is part of the delivery. You receive a description of the data flows, the assignments and the rules for special cases so that your team or another provider understands the integration and can continue it. Source code and access stay with you.

12

Effort and price of Magento Odoo: how we calculate

A flat figure for Magento Odoo would be unreliable because the effort depends on your constellation. It is determined by the number of data flows, the quality of the data in Odoo, the number of special cases with prices, warehouses and customers and the required timeliness. A data flow in one direction is built much faster than a synchronization in both directions with conflict rules.

We work with an open hourly rate of 30 euros net, without emergency surcharge. After the inventory you receive a written estimate that lists the data flows individually so that you can control scope and order yourself. For clearly defined packages a fixed price is also possible. All prices are on the page pricing.

Besides the development, include the running items: hosting, maintenance and, where applicable, licenses or fees for Odoo and for additional services. We show these items separately in the estimate so that you can compare quotes over several years.

13

What you do not get from us and how references stand

An honest offer includes naming the limits. We do not sell a ready-made connector off the shelf but develop Magento Odoo project by project according to your processes. That means: we implement exactly what you need, but not in a day and not for a flat price that cannot be calculated beforehand.

We are a web agency in which fixed freelancers work together, all from home offices. We are not a large agency with a hundred employees and cannot take on every project at every time. We tell you early whether and when we have capacity. We name customers only with their consent, and in the first conversation we gladly talk about comparable constellations.

We give no legal advice. Questions about commissioned data processing, data protection and the license terms of Odoo you clarify with your legal adviser and the vendor. What is technically possible depends on version, operation and license of your system and is checked in the inventory.

Let us connect shop and Odoo

With a clean Magento Odoo integration you maintain articles, stock and orders in one place only. You do not have to decide anything today: a first conversation clarifies what is feasible and costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions about Magento Odoo

Is there an official interface of Odoo?

Yes, Odoo offers an external programming interface. According to the documentation the older variants are replaced by JSON-2. Which version you use we check before the quote.

Do you need Magento if Odoo has its own shop?

Not always. If the shop of Odoo is enough, you save the integration. Magento pays off with a large range, B2B prices, several countries or special processes in the checkout.

Is there a ready-made Magento module from the vendor?

We did not find one in our research. There are connector modules from third-party vendors that we check for you before a decision.

Can Odoo stay at the center?

Yes. The shop becomes a sales channel of the ERP, your employees keep working in Odoo.

Do you develop a ready-made connector for purchase?

No. We develop the integration project by project according to your processes. That means a better fit but also an estimate instead of a list price.

What does Magento Odoo cost?

That depends on data flows, special cases and the quality of the data in Odoo. We estimate in writing after an inventory, the hourly rate is 30 euros net.

Who maintains Magento Odoo after the start?

That can be regulated by a maintenance contract. Without care an interface can fail on updates. More on the page on maintenance packages.

Do you need access to our system?

We need access to a test system of Odoo and to the interfaces. You define the permissions with your IT department, and we touch productive data only after approval.

How do we start?

With a short message through the contact form. Please name your system, the version and the desired data flows. We reply within 24 hours on working days.
