Afterbuy is a merchandise management and order processing system for online retail with which merchants manage orders from marketplaces and shops in one place, keep stock and process shipping. Whoever runs or wants to build a Magento shop besides marketplaces does not want to keep orders and stock twice. This page describes how we implement Magento Afterbuy, how it works technically and where the pitfalls lie.

An overview of the ways (API, middleware, file exchange, ready-made module) is given by the guide to ERP integration. Which type of system is meant for what is explained by the guide merchandise management, ERP and PIM. For larger ERP systems read the page on Business Central or on SAP integration, for the other systems the overview of connectors. The guide connect Afterbuy to Magento explains interface and process.

01

Afterbuy at a glance: what the system means for the shop

Afterbuy brings articles, stock and orders in online retail together and connects sales channels. Orders from marketplaces and shops arrive here, and invoices and shipping are processed from here. For many merchants it is the central place of daily business.

For Magento Afterbuy that means: the shop becomes one more sales channel. Articles, prices and stock can come from Afterbuy into the shop, orders and new customers go from the shop into Afterbuy, and shipping status and tracking numbers come back. The advantage is obvious: your employees keep working in Afterbuy and do not have to enter orders anew.

Many merchants have set up rules in Afterbuy, for example for payment receipt, shipping methods or categories. These rules are part of your way of working, and the integration must adapt to them: an order from the shop may trigger them only when all data is complete. We clarify exactly such peculiarities in the inventory.

As with every system the implementation depends on your setup: which functions you use, how articles are structured and which channels besides the shop are connected.

02

What Magento Afterbuy synchronizes between shop and system

Which data flows in Magento Afterbuy you define with us in the inventory. Typically there are five areas.

Articles and prices

Released articles with attributes and prices go from Afterbuy into the shop. Texts and images can be added in the shop so that the merchandise management is not overloaded.

Stock

The stock comes from Afterbuy and is shown in the shop. With several sales channels we decide with you whether the shop sees the whole stock or only part of it.

Orders

Every order is created as a sales order in Afterbuy, with items, shipping method, payment method and addresses. An order is transferred only once, even if the connection is interrupted.

Customers

New customers are created in Afterbuy and assigned unambiguously. We avoid duplicate customers through clear rules for the comparison.

Shipping and tracking numbers

Shipping status and tracking numbers go back into the shop so that customers see in the account where their order stands.

Not every Magento Afterbuy project needs all five areas. Often it begins with orders and stock and later grows by article maintenance and documents. This way you see results quickly and can use the budget in stages.

03

The data flows of Magento Afterbuy at a glance

The table shows a typical pattern. In your business it may differ, and that is exactly what we clarify in the inventory.

DataLeading systemDirectionTypical rhythm
Article master and variantsAfterbuyAfterbuy to shopregularly or on change

StockAfterbuyAfterbuy to shopoften, depending on need
OrdersShopShop to Afterbuyimmediately or at short intervals

With Magento Afterbuy a clear rule on data ownership prevents most disputes. Whatever can be changed in both systems leads to contradictions sooner or later. That is why we define exactly one leading system per type of data and describe the rule for the conflict case. Especially with variants, units and tax rates an assignment table that the department and the developers review together is worthwhile.

04

The interfaces of Afterbuy: what is technically available

For Magento Afterbuy, Afterbuy offers according to our sources an XML interface. The login runs through two pieces of information, a partner token and an account token. According to guides from third-party vendors, the partner access is created in the administration of the Afterbuy account. We did not find an official developer documentation in our research, the information comes from integrations of other vendors and from libraries.

We therefore check before the quote which functions of the interface are available in your account, how articles, orders and stock are queried and written and which limits exist. We tell you openly if something is not possible or only to a limited extent. An XML interface is older than a modern REST interface, but it can be addressed reliably if error handling and repetition are built cleanly.

For Magento Afterbuy the same holds as for every integration: the interface is only half of the work. The other half are your rules, for example when an order is passed on, how discounts and shipping costs land as items in Afterbuy and which shipping method belongs to which parcel service. We keep these assignments in the admin as settings so that they can be changed without development. We avoid direct access to the database, with a cloud service it is not intended anyway.

05

Ready-made module, middleware or individual development for Magento Afterbuy

For the connection of Afterbuy and Magento there may be add-on products from third-party vendors. Before a decision we check honestly whether one fits your process, how it is maintained and what happens on updates of Magento. If an existing product covers your requirements, it is often the more economical choice, and we will tell you so.

An individual development for Magento Afterbuy pays off if your processes deviate from the standard: special price rules, several warehouses, bundles, own attributes or processes that a ready-made product does not know. It is more expensive at the start but fits exactly. Include the care as well: a ready-made product saves development time but causes license and update costs, and an individual development needs someone who looks after it.

A middleware pays off if more than two systems are connected, for example shop, Afterbuy, accounting and shipping provider. The decision aid is in the guide to ERP integration.

06

The Magento side: how Magento Afterbuy is implemented in the shop

On the Magento side we build the integration as its own module according to the standards of the system, without interventions in the core. The module uses the interfaces and queues of Magento so that transfers run in the background and the shop does not become slower for visitors. Orders are placed in a queue on arrival and processed there until the ERP has confirmed them.

Prices by customer group, tier prices and several warehouses are mapped by Magento with its own functions that the integration fills. Where possible we use these standard functions instead of inventing our own tables. That keeps the shop update-capable and lets other developers join in later.

In the admin you see what was transferred: a log shows date, record and result, with a filter for errors. For the peculiarities of Afterbuy we add settings in the admin, for example assignments of payment methods, shipping methods and tax classes, so that changes need no development.

Afterbuy is a hub for multichannel trade with orders, articles, stock and shipping. Magento Afterbuy is therefore built so that the shop stays one channel among several and does not disturb the processes you have set up in Afterbuy.

07

Typical pitfalls with Magento Afterbuy

We see these points again and again in projects. They can be planned if they are known early.

  • Several sales channels

The stock is sold for marketplaces and shop at the same time, and overselling occurs.

  • Variants and attributes

The structure of variants in Afterbuy does not fit Magento one to one and needs a clean assignment.

  • Unclear data ownership

Prices or texts are changed in both systems and overwrite each other.

  • Missing monitoring

A failed transfer is noticed only after days because nobody looks at the log.

  • Credentials

The token of an integration is passed on or stays valid after a change of provider.

  • Special cases

Partial deliveries, returns, credit notes and foreign orders are missing in the concept.

An integration for Magento Afterbuy should also withstand short outages of the system: transfers are buffered and caught up later instead of being lost. That increases reliability in daily work considerably and is standard with us.

Security and data protection with Magento Afterbuy

An integration connects two systems with business data, so clear rules apply. The exchange runs encrypted, credentials do not lie in the source code but in the protected configuration, and the integration receives only the rights it needs. Access belongs to a separate service account, never to a private account of a person.

When testing we work with test data or anonymized data as far as possible. As soon as developers get access to personal data, for example customer accounts or orders from Afterbuy, an agreement on commissioned data processing is needed. We clarify that before the start so that you are legally well set up.

The log of the integration contains what is necessary for operation but no credentials and no unnecessary personal data. Retention periods are defined with you. These notes are not legal advice, the concrete arrangement depends on your company.

09

How a project for Magento Afterbuy runs

We keep the start deliberately short so that you quickly know whether and how the integration is feasible.

01

Inventory

We clarify version, operation, access and contacts at Afterbuy, the desired data flows and the special cases. The result is a short concept.

02

Test environment

We work against a test system of Afterbuy and a Magento development state, never first against live data.

03

Implementation

The data flows are built one by one, with a log, repetition on errors and clear rules for conflicts.

04

Test and start

You check with real examples, then we start step by step and look at the log together in the first weeks.

Also with Magento Afterbuy you stay informed between the steps: you receive a short status of what is done, what comes next and where we need your decision. We record decisions in writing so that it stays traceable later why something was built this way.

10

Three typical constellations (examples, not customer references)

The following constellations are examples from the practice of Magento Afterbuy projects, not statements about particular customers. The first is a merchant who has so far sold only through marketplaces, uses Afterbuy as the center and builds an own shop. The orders from the shop should land in the same process as all others, and the stock should be correct across all channels.

The second constellation is a merchant with many variants, for example sizes and colors. The challenge lies in the assignment of the variants and attributes between Afterbuy and Magento and in which texts and images are maintained where. We define early what stays in Afterbuy and what arises in the shop.

The third constellation is a business that switches from another shop system to Magento and keeps Afterbuy. Here the existing connection is the benchmark: what it achieves today the new shop should at least achieve. How the switch itself runs is described on our page on migration.

11

Operation, monitoring and care of Magento Afterbuy after the start

An interface is not a one-off project but ongoing operation. After the start a log monitors every transfer: what was transferred when, what failed, what is repeated? Errors that cannot be fixed automatically are reported visibly so that nobody learns of them only through a customer complaint.

Updates change the situation. A Magento update, a new state at Afterbuy or a change of the vendor interface can affect the integration. Therefore the planning includes an agreement on how updates are tested and who approves them. Ongoing care can be regulated through a maintenance contract that covers monitoring, updates and error fixing.

Documentation is part of the delivery. You receive a description of the data flows, the assignments and the rules for special cases so that your team or another provider understands the integration and can continue it. Source code and access stay with you.

12

Effort and price of Magento Afterbuy: how we calculate

A flat figure for Magento Afterbuy would be unreliable because the effort depends on your constellation. It is determined by the number of data flows, the quality of the data in Afterbuy, the number of special cases with prices, warehouses and customers and the required timeliness. A data flow in one direction is built much faster than a synchronization in both directions with conflict rules.

We work with an open hourly rate of 30 euros net, without emergency surcharge. After the inventory you receive a written estimate that lists the data flows individually so that you can control scope and order yourself. For clearly defined packages a fixed price is also possible. All prices are on the page pricing.

Besides the development, include the running items: hosting, maintenance and, where applicable, licenses or fees for Afterbuy and for additional services. We show these items separately in the estimate so that you can compare quotes over several years.

13

What you do not get from us and how references stand

An honest offer includes naming the limits. We do not sell a ready-made connector off the shelf but develop Magento Afterbuy project by project according to your processes. That means: we implement exactly what you need, but not in a day and not for a flat price that cannot be calculated beforehand.

We are a web agency in which fixed freelancers work together, all from home offices. We are not a large agency with a hundred employees and cannot take on every project at every time. We tell you early whether and when we have capacity. We name customers only with their consent, and in the first conversation we gladly talk about comparable constellations.

We give no legal advice. Questions about commissioned data processing, data protection and the license terms of Afterbuy you clarify with your legal adviser and the vendor. What is technically possible depends on version, operation and license of your system and is checked in the inventory.

Let us connect shop and Afterbuy

With a clean Magento Afterbuy integration you maintain articles, stock and orders in one place only. You do not have to decide anything today: a first conversation clarifies what is feasible and costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions about Magento Afterbuy

Is there an official interface of Afterbuy?

According to our sources Afterbuy offers an XML interface with partner and account token. We did not find an official developer documentation, the scope we check before the quote.

Can Afterbuy stay at the center?

Yes. The shop becomes a sales channel, your employees keep working in Afterbuy.

What about marketplaces?

Stock must stay consistent across all channels. We build the shop as one channel among several and avoid assumptions that disturb other channels.

Are there ready-made solutions for Magento Afterbuy?

There may be products from third-party vendors. Before a decision we check whether one fits your process and tell you openly if so.

Do you develop a ready-made connector for purchase?

No. We develop the integration project by project according to your processes. That means a better fit but also an estimate instead of a list price.

What does Magento Afterbuy cost?

That depends on data flows, special cases and the quality of the data in Afterbuy. We estimate in writing after an inventory, the hourly rate is 30 euros net.

Who maintains Magento Afterbuy after the start?

That can be regulated by a maintenance contract. Without care an interface can fail on updates. More on the page on maintenance packages.

Do you need access to our system?

We need access to a test system of Afterbuy and to the interfaces. You define the permissions with your IT department, and we touch productive data only after approval.

How do we start?

With a short message through the contact form. Please name your system, the version and the desired data flows. We reply within 24 hours on working days.
