Magento 2 delivery surcharge: pass on extra costs fairly and visibly
With the Magento 2 delivery surcharge module from Mironsoft you add markups to your existing shipping methods where delivery really gets dearer: on islands, in remote postcode areas, for heavy parcels or in certain seasons. The surcharge appears as its own clear line in the cart. Customers see before ordering what they pay and why. You maintain the rules in the admin without touching your shipping methods. The display works with Alpine.js and needs no extra library.
Rules by area
Postcodes, postcode ranges, islands and states as conditions for a surcharge.
Weight and goods value
Surcharges from a weight or up to a goods value, also per started kilogram.
Calculation types
Flat amount, percentage of the shipping price or amount per kilogram, with a cap.
Choose shipping methods
A surcharge applies only to the shipping methods you tick, such as the parcel service only.
Own line
The surcharge appears separately and named in the cart, translated per store view.
Period and group
Validity from to, for example for the Christmas season, and rules per customer group.
Why one uniform shipping price costs money in a Magento 2 shop
A parcel to an island costs the carrier more than one to a city. Heavy parcels cause extra fees, and in the pre-Christmas period many carriers add a markup. Whoever charges the same shipping price everywhere pays these extra costs themselves or loses orders because the uniform price is set too high for everybody. That is why merchants look for a Magento 2 delivery surcharge that applies exactly where the costs arise.
Hidden markups inside the shipping price are a poor solution: customers do not understand why the price jumps and abandon the purchase. A clearly named Magento 2 delivery surcharge in the cart creates trust because it explains what it pays for. That matters especially for price information before the order is completed.
Define a Magento 2 delivery surcharge by postcode and island
Each rule consists of conditions and an amount. As conditions you use country, state, single postcodes or postcode ranges, for example 25990 to 25999 for an island. Long lists are imported as CSV. You can also combine conditions with weight, goods value or a product attribute, for example for goods that always ship at a higher rate. Every rule has a name, so your team still knows later what it was meant for.
- Country, state, postcode and postcode ranges as conditions
- CSV import of long postcode lists
- Combination with weight, goods value and product attribute
Calculating the Magento 2 delivery surcharge: flat, percentage or per kilogram
For each rule you choose the calculation type: a flat amount, a percentage of the shipping price or an amount per started kilogram. A cap limits the surcharge so that it cannot run away. When several rules apply, priority and stacking decide whether they are added or only the most important counts. A tax class defines how the surcharge is taxed. Which treatment is right in your case you clarify with your tax adviser.
- Flat amount, percentage or amount per kilogram
- Cap, priority and stacking of several rules
- Tax class selectable for the surcharge
The Magento 2 delivery surcharge as its own line in the cart
The surcharge shows in the cart and at checkout as its own line directly below the shipping costs, with a label such as island surcharge or surcharge for parcels over 30 kg. A short explanatory text can be shown with it. If the customer changes the postcode or shipping method, the line adapts without a page reload. You maintain the texts per store view so that English customers get an English note. Whether and how you must show surcharges is for your legal adviser to check.
- Own line with label and explanatory text
- Update when address or shipping method changes
- Texts maintainable per store view
Magento 2 delivery surcharge: period, shipping method and customer group under control
Not every surcharge should apply always and to everybody. You define the period in which a rule is active, such as a seasonal surcharge from 1 November to 24 December, and for which shipping methods it applies. For business customers with a framework contract you can exempt certain customer groups. An overview in the admin lists all rules with status and order, and a test function calculates the surcharge for a sample address before you activate a rule.
- Validity period for seasonal surcharges
- Surcharge only for selected shipping methods
- Test calculation for a sample address in the admin
Where the Magento 2 delivery surcharge is needed in daily shop work
Typical cases in which a delivery costs more than the normal price.
Islands and remote areas
The Magento 2 delivery surcharge passes on the carrier’s extra costs for islands or alpine valleys without raising the normal price.
Heavy parcels
From a certain weight a surcharge applies, tiered per kilogram, with a cap as a ceiling.
Seasonal business
In the pre-Christmas period a limited markup applies and then ends by itself.
Bulky or fragile goods
A product attribute marks items for which the carrier charges extra fees, and the surcharge follows automatically.
Magento 2 delivery surcharge: without and with the module
The difference to a uniform price and to a table-rate method.
| Topic | Without the module | With Delivery Surcharges |
|---|---|---|
| Extra costs | Hidden in the uniform price or carried yourself | Charged exactly where they arise |
| Transparency | Price jump without explanation | Own line with label in the cart |
| Maintenance | New method or table for every special case | Rules on existing methods, with test calculation |
| Season | Change prices by hand and reset them | Store a period, the rule ends by itself |
| Customer groups | Same prices for everyone | Exceptions for framework-contract customers |

Delimitation from table rates, freight shipping and per-product shipping
The table-rate shipping method builds the base price of its own shipping method from a table. The freight shipping module provides a separate method for bulky goods, and per-product shipping sets costs per item. The Magento 2 delivery surcharge instead sits on top of existing shipping methods and shows extra costs separately.
All modules can be combined. The display runs on Alpine.js in the Hyvä theme, without jQuery and without Knockout.
No download — personal setup instead
Delivery Surcharges is not listed here as a ready-made download file for self-installation. The purchase is a service commission: we get in touch after the purchase, install the module in your shop and agree on rules, areas and texts together with you.
