1. Production-Ready PHPUnit Checklist: Structure, Speed, Docker, PhpStorm, Magento

   Jun 18, 2025

A slow, unstructured test suite is not a test suite, it is a drag on the team. This checklist surfaces every place where PHPUnit setups lose time, maintainability and developer trust, and gives a directly actionable step for each point.

2. Mocking Anti-Patterns: When Tests Only Mirror Implementation Details

   Jun 13, 2025

A test that turns red on every implementation change without the observable behavior having changed is not a test, it is an obstacle. Overspecified mocks, testing your own classes through mocks, spy abuse, and expectation overload are the most common causes of brittle PHPUnit suites that create more maintenance effort than confidence.

3. PHPUnit Test Reviews in Teams: What Tests Should Actually Be Checked For

   May 29, 2025

Green tests do not mean the code is safe. In many teams, tests only get a superficial look in review, whether they run, whether coverage numbers add up. Yet it is entirely different criteria that decide whether a PHPUnit test provides real protection against regressions or merely fakes safety.

4. Keeping Plugins and Observers in Magento Testable with PHPUnit

   May 28, 2025

Magento plugins and observers are powerful extension points, but their tight coupling to the Magento ObjectManager makes them hard to test. With the right refactoring approach, the core logic of any plugin or observer can be extracted and tested in isolation with PHPUnit, entirely without a Magento bootstrap.

5. Configuring PHPUnit for Magento in PhpStorm

   May 19, 2025

Running tests directly in the IDE with a single click or keyboard shortcut, without ever opening a console, is a productivity gain that quickly becomes second nature. PhpStorm supports PHPUnit for Docker-based Magento setups completely, as long as the remote interpreter and the run configuration are set up correctly. This article walks through the full setup process.

6. Testing CLI Commands and Exit Codes with PHPUnit

   May 12, 2025

CLI commands are often the least tested part of a PHP application. Yet these are exactly the commands that drive cron jobs, migrations, deployments and critical batch operations. The exit code is the only communication channel between a process and the calling system, and it has to be correct so CI pipelines and orchestrators can react to failures.

7. PHPUnit Database Tests: When Real DB Access Makes Sense

   Apr 22, 2025

Repository tests with mocks check the wrong layer. A mock repository cannot detect a SQL syntax problem, an index problem, or an N+1 bug. Real database access in tests is expensive, but irreplaceable at the right spots. The art lies in knowing exactly where those spots are and how to implement database isolation reliably.

8. PHPUnit Snapshots in PHP Tests: When Useful, When Dangerous

   Apr 9, 2025

Snapshot tests sound tempting: run once, save the result, done. In practice, though, they quickly turn into a maintenance burden if you do not exactly understand which scenarios they fit and how much discipline the team needs to apply.

9. Securing SearchCriteria, Collections and EAV Access in Tests

   Apr 1, 2025

SearchCriteria queries, collection filters and EAV attributes are the three most common data access patterns in Magento, and at the same time the three most common places where tests are either missing or structured incorrectly. This article shows which test type fits which access pattern and how to secure each one correctly.

10. Magento 2 Test Pyramid: Unit, Integration and MFTF Compared

    Mar 28, 2025

The most common misallocation in test automation: too many slow end-to-end tests and too few fast unit tests. The test pyramid provides the right weighting, three levels with clearly separated responsibilities that together form a reliable test strategy.
