1. Multi-Environment Branching for Magento (dev/staging/prod)

   Jun 6, 2025

Teams that never cleanly separate branches from deployment environments eventually push untested code straight to production by accident. This article shows how Magento teams can map branches unambiguously to dev, staging, and prod, promote code through environments via merge and tag instead of rebase, keep configuration out of the shared history, and lock down branches and pipelines per environment.

2. Using the CODEOWNERS File Effectively

   May 15, 2025

The CODEOWNERS file automatically assigns pull and merge requests to the right reviewers, based on which file paths changed. This article explains the syntax and path matching rules, shows how to combine CODEOWNERS with branch protection on GitHub and GitLab, provides practical examples for Magento 2 and Hyva projects, and describes how a team keeps the file current over time.

3. Keeping Sensitive Data Out of Git in Magento Projects

   Apr 30, 2025

A single accidental commit containing database credentials or the crypt key from app/etc/env.php can compromise an entire Magento project, even after the repository is later set back to private. This article explains which files must never end up in Git, what a clean gitignore baseline looks like, and how a secrets manager and pre commit scanning reliably prevent it.

4. Signed Commits with GPG: Ensuring Authenticity

   Apr 27, 2025

Anyone can set git config user.name and user.email to any value and create commits that appear to come from a colleague, without Git preventing it. This article shows how GPG- and SSH-based commit signatures cryptographically prove who actually created a commit, how to set up keys, verify signatures, and enforce signed commits across a team through branch protection rules.

5. Optimizing the Pull Request Workflow for the Team

   Mar 30, 2025

A cumbersome pull request workflow slows entire teams down, huge diffs, missing context, and manual merge coordination all add up to friction. This article shows how small pull requests, draft PRs, PR templates, and required checks with auto-merge work together to make reviews faster and the whole workflow more predictable.

6. Squash Commits: When They Make Sense and When They Don't

   Mar 29, 2025

Squash merge promises a spotless main history with one commit per pull request, but that convenience comes at a cost. Collapsing granular commits too eagerly sacrifices bisect precision, authorship, and the documented path behind large refactors. This article explains how squashing works mechanically, when it genuinely helps teams, and when rebase merge or merge commits remain the better choice.

7. commit-msg Hooks for Commit Message Validation

   Mar 26, 2025

Waving commit messages through without validation builds up months of history full of entries like fix and wip that are useless for changelogs and automated releases alike. The commit-msg hook checks every message before the commit is created, and commitlint together with Husky enforces a consistent format that tools like semantic-release can reliably parse.

8. Husky and lint-staged: Enforcing Hooks Across the Team

   Mar 24, 2025

Local Git hooks live in .git/hooks and are never versioned with the repository, so every developer has to set them up individually and teams end up with no reliable way to enforce code quality before a commit. Husky distributes hooks automatically through npm, lint-staged limits checks to changed files, and commitlint enforces clean commit messages, all without manual setup.

9. Server-Side Hooks: Centrally Controlling Push Validation

   Mar 23, 2025

Client-side Git hooks are convenient, but every developer can bypass them with --no-verify, delete them, or simply never install them. Server-side hooks, by contrast, run on the central Git server, where nobody has direct access, making them the only real enforcement point for force-push protection, file size limits and branch naming conventions across the team.

10. Git Submodules vs. Alternatives for Multi-Repo Setups

    Mar 20, 2025

Git submodules promise to cleanly stitch multiple repositories together, but in practice forgotten updates, a confusing detached HEAD state, and diverging commit pins across the team cause frustration on a regular basis. This article explains how submodules technically work, compares them with git subtree, Composer based dependencies, and monorepos, and shows which tool actually fits typical Magento multi repo setups.
