1. What a Magento maintenance contract is for
A Magento shop is not a product that is finished after go-live. Security updates appear several times a year, extensions get new versions, payment and shipping providers change their interfaces, and the server needs care. A Magento maintenance contract defines who takes on these tasks, how fast they react and what it costs.
Without a contract, maintenance usually runs on request. That works as long as all goes well. If the shop goes down on a Friday evening, it depends on chance whether somebody has time. With a Magento maintenance contract both sides know in advance what applies, and you avoid disputes about responsibilities and invoices.
This guide is written for shop owners who want to conclude a contract or review an existing one. Concrete packages with prices are on our page maintenance packages.
An everyday example: a payment provider changes an interface and announces it. Whoever has ongoing care gets the adjustment in time and notices nothing. Whoever does not notices the error when orders stop coming in. Such events are not an exception but part of the normal operation of an online shop and the real reason for ongoing care.
2. Which services a Magento maintenance contract should contain
The services of a Magento maintenance contract can be divided into five areas. The table shows what belongs to each and what to watch for.
| Area | Typical service | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Updates and patches | Security patches, version updates, extensions | How soon after release, tested before go-live |
| Monitoring | Availability, error logs, certificates | Who is informed and how fast |
| Backups | Regular backup, test of restoration | Where backups are stored, how often tested |
| Support | Bug fixing, questions, small adjustments | Response time, hour contingent |
| Reports | Monthly overview of work done | Understandable and traceable |
A good Magento maintenance contract names these services explicitly. Wording such as "care of the shop" without a list leaves too much room for interpretation later. Ask what exactly is included and what is billed separately.
3. Response times and emergencies in the Magento maintenance contract
Response time is where contracts differ most. It describes how fast somebody answers after your report, not how fast the problem is solved. Both values should be stated separately. With us the Basic package responds within 48 hours and the Business package within 24 hours.
Also clarify what an emergency is and whether surcharges apply. If checkout fails, that is an emergency for you, but for the contract perhaps only a normal report. A transparent Magento maintenance contract defines emergencies and states the conditions. With us there is no emergency surcharge.
Also ask who takes over during holidays or illness of your contact person. A stand-in rule belongs in every serious contract because incidents do not follow holiday plans. Check availability too: on which days, at what times and through which channel reports are accepted. A contract that names only an email address is weak for acute incidents.
4. Prices and term: what a Magento maintenance contract costs
Prices for a Magento maintenance contract range from small flat fees for pure updates to comprehensive service contracts with fixed hours. What matters is not the lowest figure but what is in it. A cheap contract that only covers updates and bills every bug fix separately can become more expensive than a comprehensive one.
With us the Basic package starts at 89 euros per month and the Business package at 249 euros per month. Both can be cancelled monthly. The exact services are on the page maintenance packages. Additional hours are billed at 30 euros net, as stated on the pricing page.
Watch the term. Long commitments of twelve or 24 months improve the price but restrict your freedom if the service is not right. Contracts that can be cancelled monthly are usually the safer choice for shop owners.
Always compare offers on the basis of the same services. A package for 89 euros and one for 249 euros can only be compared if you know how many hours of support are included, how fast the response is and whether updates are carried out with or without tests. Note the answers in a simple table, and the decision becomes much easier.
5. Checklist: seven points for your Magento maintenance contract
Seven points that should be in every contract
- ✓Which services are included, which are billed separately?
- ✓How fast are security patches installed, and is there testing beforehand?
- ✓Which response time applies, and how is an emergency defined?
- ✓Are there regular backups with a test of restoration?
- ✓How many hours of support are included in the price?
- ✓Which term and notice period apply?
- ✓Do source code, access and documentation belong to you?
With these seven questions you can compare any offer for a Magento maintenance contract. Where answers are missing, it is worth following up.
6. Warning signs in a Magento maintenance contract
Some wording should make you alert. It includes unlimited promises such as "all updates included" without a note on effort, automatic renewals with long terms and blanket exclusions of liability. Missing information on data protection is also a warning sign.
Regulate data protection and access
As soon as a provider has access to your shop with customer data, a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is generally required. Clarify this before the first access. Take legal advice on contracts and liability questions in individual cases.
Also demand that access is granted per person and that you keep access to your shop and your source code at all times. A provider who refuses that ties you to themselves.
7. Common misconceptions about the Magento maintenance contract
The first misconception: you only need maintenance when something breaks. Maintenance is prevention, and security updates in particular only work if they arrive in time. Which update work belongs to it is described on the page about the update service.
The second misconception: the hosting provider does the maintenance. They usually look after the server, not your shop. The third misconception: a Magento maintenance contract makes the shop invulnerable. It reduces risks but does not replace everyday security measures such as strong passwords and restricted access. More on the page about security.
