Magento 2 Category Banner: the right message for every customer group
Guests, regular customers and trade buyers browse the same catalog but do not need the same message. With the Mironsoft Magento 2 category banner, you store several banners per category and decide who sees them and when. Time-limited campaigns start and end by themselves. The output runs on Alpine.js in the Hyvä theme and loads no additional library.
Per customer group
A Magento 2 category banner can apply to one or several customer groups, including logged-out guests.
Time period
Start and end with date and time following the time zone of the store view, no manual switching.
Desktop and mobile
Upload a separate image for small screens. The output uses the picture element without JavaScript.
Subcategories
A banner applies to the category alone or to all subcategories that have no banner of their own.
Priority and fallback
If several banners match, the highest priority wins. If none matches, a fallback appears.
Link and alt text
Target page, link target and alt text are maintained per store view so that language and accessibility are right.
Why a single category image is no longer enough
Magento knows one image and one description per category. That is enough as long as all visitors are addressed alike. Once you have trade prices, regular-customer offers or new-customer discounts, not everyone should see the same banner. A trade buyer needs the hint about tier prices, a new customer the voucher.
A Magento 2 category banner per customer group solves this without extra categories or theme changes. The banner belongs to the category, the rules live in the admin, and the marketing team maintains them itself. Time-limited campaigns no longer have to be switched by hand at midnight on the deadline.
Create a Magento 2 Category Banner: image, link, alt text
Each Magento 2 category banner consists of a desktop image, an optional mobile image, a link, alt text and an internal name. You assign it to one or several categories and choose the position, for example above the product list. The alt text is maintained per store view. Images are scaled to sensible sizes on upload so the page stays fast and the layout does not jump.
- Desktop and mobile image, link and alt text per store view
- Assignment to one or several categories
- Scaled images with fixed dimensions against layout shift
Serve a Magento 2 Category Banner per customer group
For each banner you select one or several customer groups, including the logged-out group. The module reads the visitor group and serves the matching banner. The Magento full page cache already varies by customer group, so the Magento 2 category banner stays cached. If several banners are valid at the same time, the priority decides, and a fallback applies if no rule matches.
- Multi-select including logged-out guests
- Priority when several banners match
- Fallback banner when no rule matches
Scheduling the Magento 2 Category Banner
Start and end time define when the Magento 2 category banner appears. The time follows the time zone of the store view so that a campaign starting at midnight applies to the right market. A cron run clears the affected cache at the switch so visitors see the new banner without delay. Expired banners remain in the admin and can be duplicated for the next campaign.
- Start and end with time in the store view time zone
- Cache switch at start and end via cron
- Duplicate expired banners instead of creating new ones
Magento 2 Category Banner: inheritance to subcategories and mobile view
A Magento 2 category banner assigned to a parent category can radiate to all subcategories. A subcategory banner of its own takes precedence over an inherited one. In large category trees you maintain a few banners instead of hundreds. For small screens the picture element delivers the mobile image, and banners without a mobile image are scaled automatically.
- Radiate to subcategories optionally
- A subcategory banner beats the inherited one
- Mobile image via picture element, no JavaScript
Where the Magento 2 Category Banner helps in daily shop work
Typical situations in which a banner does more than a category image.
Trade and retail customers
A hint about tier prices for the trade group, a shipping offer for everyone else, both on the same category.
Campaigns with a time window
The banner for the sales week appears at the start by itself and disappears at the end, no night shift.
Winning new customers
Visitors without a login see a welcome discount, logged-in customers see the hint about their account.
Multilingual shops
Each store view has its own image, link and alt text, without additional categories.

Differences to banner slider, category images and category content blocks
The Mironsoft banner slider shows rotating banners on any page. The category images manage the single image per category, and the category content blocks attach CMS blocks. The Magento 2 category banner is different: it controls which customer group sees which banner on a category page in which period.
The modules can be combined. The output uses Alpine.js in the Hyvä theme, without jQuery and without an additional library.
