Magento Freelancer: Development for Shop, Hyvä and Integrations
MAGENTO FREELANCERDevelopment from EUR 30 per hour
Your Magento freelancer for shop, Hyvä and integrations
Looking for a Magento freelancer who builds modules, connects your ERP or moves your shop to Hyvä, without paying for agency overhead? Here is what we take on, how billing works and when a freelancer is the better choice.
A Magento freelancer is the right choice when the task is clearly defined and you want to talk directly to the person who writes the code. A new module, an ERP interface, the move to Hyvä, a performance problem or an update your team cannot fit in: these are typical freelancer jobs.
We are a web agency in which fixed freelancers work together, all remotely, and have worked with Magento since 2012. You get a fixed contact instead of a project manager in between, and an hourly rate that is published openly on our pricing page.
01
Who looks for a Magento freelancer, and facing which decision?
Behind the search for a Magento freelancer there are usually four situations. Where you recognise yourself decides what to clarify next:
Shop owner with a concrete task
You need, for example, a payment method the standard does not know. The key question is whether the task is small enough for an hour budget. Describe it in three sentences before the first conversation.
Owner whose developer has left
The shop runs, but nobody knows the code. First you do not need a new feature, but an overview and a reliable handover.
Agency with a bottleneck
A project has more work than the team can handle. What counts here is how quickly an external developer fits into your routines.
Managing director facing the basic question
Employee, agency or freelancer? The answer depends on whether the work is permanent and broad or selective and deep.
02
When a Magento freelancer is the right choice
A Magento freelancer fits tasks you can describe in hours and days: an interface to your ERP, a checkout that hangs on one payment method, a category page that became slow after a redesign. The clearer the goal, the better the effort can be estimated.
A freelancer is also worth it as a reinforcement for an in-house team. When your developers are busy with daily work, we take over single tickets or a contained sub-project and deliver the code through your Git repository.
Where a freelancer reaches limits, we say so up front: projects with many parallel workstreams, round-the-clock on-call duty, or several developers who must work on one release at the same time. Then a larger agency or a mix of both makes more sense.
Rule of thumb
If you can describe the task in one sentence, it is usually a job for a Magento freelancer. If you need a slide deck to explain it, start with an intro call.
03
What a Magento freelancer does for you
Our work falls into a few core areas. Each one has its own page with details.
Four requests that reach us regularly, and how we approach them:
The checkout fails on one payment method
We reproduce the error on the test system, read the log files, check for conflicts between plugins and fix the cause instead of only covering the symptom.
The ERP delivers stock levels only at night
We switch to a delta sync that transfers changed products only, and add an error log that is visible in the admin.
The shop is too slow on smartphones
We measure with real user data, find the biggest brakes, often images and JavaScript from third-party modules, and fix them in order of impact.
The update fails because of third-party modules
We check with Composer which modules are incompatible, update or replace them and test the flow from cart to order.
Every one of these jobs starts with an analysis. Only then do we decide together whether a fixed price makes sense or billing by the hour is the better fit.
05
How working with a Magento freelancer looks like
The process is deliberately lean so you know where you stand.
01
Intro call
Free and non-binding. You describe the task and the starting point, we ask questions.
02
Effort estimate
You get a traceable hour estimate or a fixed-price offer if the scope is clear.
03
Implementation
We work on a staging environment with Git version control and show interim results.
04
Handover
Acceptance on the test system, deployment as agreed and a short note on what changed.
What drives the effort: the number of systems involved, data quality, documentation of existing interfaces and the state of the current code. A small change is a matter of hours, an ERP interface can take weeks. That is why we name numbers only after the intro call.
07
Magento freelancer or agency: which is better?
Both models work. What matters is what your project needs.
Criterion
Magento freelancer
Large agency
Contact
One fixed person, direct line to the developer
Account manager and project lead in between
Cost
Low hourly rate, hardly any overhead
Higher rates, project management is billed too
Scaling
Limited with many parallel tasks
Several developers at the same time
Absence risk
Depends on one person, mitigated by documentation and Git
Cover within the team
Specialisation
Depth in few topics, here Magento and Hyvä
Broad offer, often several platforms
Start
Short path from call to order
Often a longer offer and coordination phase
We are both on a small scale: a freelancer model with the services of a Magento agency. Where a project needs more capacity, we tell you openly.
08
Three ways of working with a Magento freelancer
Not every task needs the same form of cooperation. Depending on how predictable your plan is, these models fit:
Hour budget
You book a frame of hours that we draw on as needed. This suits ongoing small tasks when you do not want a new offer every time. Every hour is documented, so you can always see what it was used for.
Project with a clear goal
For bounded work such as an interface or a Hyvä migration we fix scope and result in advance. You get an estimate, a schedule and interim acceptances where you can decide whether we continue as planned.
Ongoing care
If the shop needs a permanent contact, a Magento freelancer moves into the care role: updates, bug fixing and small improvements within a maintenance package.
The models can be combined. Many customers start with a project and then switch to an hour budget or a maintenance package, because the Magento freelancer already knows the shop by then.
09
Billing and transparency with a Magento freelancer
With an hourly rate of 30 euros, the key question is not the amount but traceability. At any time you should know how many hours have accrued and for what. That is why we track effort per ticket and give you the breakdown on request whenever you want it, not only with the invoice.
Before we start there is an effort estimate. It is not a guarantee, but an honest assessment based on what we see in the intro call and the analysis. Foreseeable extra effort is reported before it happens: as soon as a task turns out larger than expected, we talk to you about whether to adjust the scope, split the task or carry on. Hours you have not approved do not quietly pile up.
This protects both sides. You keep control of costs, and a Magento freelancer does not work blind, because every extension has a clear order. If you have a budget, tell us right away and we plan the order of tasks around it.
10
Getting to know your existing shop
Most jobs involve a grown shop rather than a new one. Before we change anything, we get an overview:
01
Access and overview
We get read access to code and staging and look at which Magento version, which modules and which theme are in use.
02
Finding deviations
We look for changes to the core, overridden templates and modules that are no longer maintained.
03
Naming risks
You get a short list of what we notice and how urgent it is.
04
First task
Only then does the actual work begin, with a task whose effort we can now estimate reliably.
If the state of the code is unclear, a code audit up front is worthwhile. Onboarding is not an end in itself: the better a Magento freelancer understands your shop, the fewer follow-up questions and rework come later.
11
What belongs in a Magento freelancer handover?
A Magento freelancer should not make themselves indispensable. That is why every job includes a handover that keeps you independent:
Traceable commits
Every change sits in Git with a clear description of what was changed and why.
A short description per module
What the module is for, which settings it has and which parts of the shop depend on it.
Notes for operations
What to consider during deployment, which cron jobs run and where to look first when something fails.
Open points
What was deliberately not done and what we would recommend next.
These documents are not a formality. They are the reason another developer or your own team can carry on after our job without obstacles.
12
Magento freelancer as a subcontractor for agencies and teams
Shop owners are not the only ones looking for a Magento freelancer. Agencies and development teams also bring in reinforcement when a project peaks or a special skill is missing, such as Hyvä, an ERP interface or performance. In that case we work as a subcontractor: you stay the contact for your customer, we deliver in the background.
On request we work as a white-label partner. Then we do not appear in front of your customers, communicate only with you and follow your processes, your tickets and your code conventions. Confidentiality is part of it and can be agreed in writing beforehand.
A clear division of tasks matters: who decides on the architecture, who accepts the result, who talks to the end customer? Once that is settled, a Magento freelancer fits into an existing team without friction. On legal questions such as the line to false self-employment, this is only a pointer, not advice: have it checked by a professional if needed.
13
What happens if the Magento freelancer is unavailable?
The most common argument against a single Magento freelancer is absence: illness, holidays, a job that runs longer. We meet this with our structure. We are a web agency with fixed freelancers who coordinate with each other and follow the same standards.
If your contact is unavailable, a colleague from the team can take over, because the code is in Git, tasks are in the ticket system and the documentation is current. You do not start from zero and do not have to explain your shop a second time.
We do not promise round-the-clock on-call duty with this. For acute outages there is our emergency support, and the response time you can expect from a maintenance package is stated there. That is part of being honest: a freelancer team is sturdier than one person, but it does not replace a shift roster.
14
Communication and tickets with your Magento freelancer
Good cooperation depends on clear agreements. This is how we handle it:
One ticket per task
Every task gets a description, a goal and an acceptance condition. That makes it clear later when something is done, and nothing gets lost in a chat.
Fixed contacts
You know who you are talking to and do not have to explain the background again every time.
Video call for complex topics
What is hard to explain in writing we clear up briefly in conversation and record the result in the ticket afterwards.
Interim results instead of surprises
We show you results early on the staging system so you can correct course before effort is lost.
15
Access and security: staging, Git and permissions
A Magento freelancer gets insight into your shop. That should happen with a sense of proportion:
Only the necessary rights
We need access to code and staging, not automatically to everything in the live admin.
Personal accounts
Every access belongs to one person so it stays traceable who changed what. We avoid shared passwords.
Staging before live
Changes are built on a test environment and go into the live shop only after your acceptance.
Closing access after the project
When the job ends, access that is no longer needed is removed.
More on protecting shops is on our page about Magento security. Any Magento freelancer should be able to offer a data protection agreement, and so can we.
16
Risks of working with a Magento freelancer and how to reduce them
Every model has weaknesses. Knowing them lets you cushion them:
Risk
What happens
What helps
Dependence on one person
Knowledge sits in one head
Git, documentation and a team that can step in
Unclear scope
Tasks grow, costs run away
Estimate, interim acceptances, notice of extra effort
Changes directly on the live shop
Errors hit customers immediately
Staging and acceptance before every deployment
Code that is hard to maintain
Every change gets more expensive
Magento standards, static analysis, code review
Missing coordination in the team
Duplicate work or repository conflicts
Shared tickets and fixed routines
None of these risks disappears by itself. A reliable Magento freelancer raises them unprompted, before they turn into problems.
17
What to look for when choosing a Magento freelancer
These six points help with any provider, including us:
Verifiable references
Ask for projects you can look at and a contact person who gives information.
Current knowledge
Magento 2.4.x, a current PHP version, OpenSearch, Hyvä experience.
Version control
Every change belongs in Git, not uploaded by FTP to the live server.
Staging instead of live experiments
Changes are accepted on a test system before they go live.
Clear billing
Hourly rate, estimate and cap in writing, no flat fees without a description of scope.
Documentation
What was changed and why, so your team or another developer can carry on.
18
Technical focus of our Magento freelancer service
Our focus is the frontend with Hyvä: Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js replace Knockout, jQuery and RequireJS. The result is far less JavaScript, better Core Web Vitals and a theme that can be customised without detours. For measuring load times we treat Core Web Vitals optimisation as a fixed part of the work.
In the backend we write modules the Magento way: plugins instead of preferences, service contracts, declarative schema, clean dependency injection. Static analysis with PHPStan and PHPCS is standard so the code stays maintainable in two years. If your shop has grown and nobody knows exactly what runs there anymore, we start with a code audit.
For data flows between systems we build interfaces to SAP, Microsoft Dynamics and common ERP systems. Error handling matters most here: what happens when the ERP does not answer, and how does the shop notice?
19
Availability and location
We work entirely remotely and have no office or reception rooms: meetings by video call, code and documents through Git and a ticket system. If you are based nearby, we gladly take on projects from the region, see our pages for Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen.
If you need a Magento freelancer for a project outside Franconia, nothing changes: we work with customers across Germany, because shops do not sit in one place anyway.
Let us talk about your task
Tell us briefly what you need. In the free intro call we clarify scope, effort and start date, without obligation.
Frequently asked questions about the Magento freelancer
What does a Magento freelancer cost per hour?
Our hourly rate is 30 euros. How many hours a task needs, we estimate after the free intro call. All pricing models are on the pricing page.
Can a Magento freelancer reinforce my existing team?
Yes. We take over single tickets or a contained sub-project, work in your Git repository and coordinate with your developers.
How fast can you start?
That depends on current workload. In the intro call we name a realistic start date and promise nothing we cannot keep.
Do you work with Magento Open Source only or with Adobe Commerce too?
Both. For Adobe Commerce there is a dedicated consulting page, the development standards are the same.
What happens if my Magento freelancer is unavailable?
That is why version control and a short written note belong to every job. Any other Magento developer can continue from there without starting from zero.
Do you look after the shop after the project?
Yes, through a maintenance package from 89 euros per month, cancellable monthly, with a defined response time.
