Magento 2 Random Sort: fair visibility for the whole catalogue
The Magento 2 random sort from Mironsoft makes sure the same products are not always on top of a category. The order rotates after a fixed time window, boost rules lift selected products, and the list stays stable while paging. Everything is built to be cache-friendly. The sort option appears in the Hyvä theme with Alpine.js, and you configure settings in the admin per category and store view.
Rotation window
The order changes after a fixed period, not on every page view.
Boost rules
New arrivals, high margin or overstock get more weight in the rotation.
Stable paging
Within a window the order stays, page 2 does not repeat products.
Cache-friendly
Few variants per window keep the page cache usable.
Unavailable at the bottom
Sold-out products slide to the end without disturbing the rotation.
Per category
Activation, window and rules can be set per category and store view.
Why a fixed order puts your catalogue at a disadvantage
Sorting categories by position or name always shows the same first products. Everything from page 2 onwards is hardly seen. That slows new arrivals, clearance items and products in the middle of the list. Merchants therefore search for ways to sort Magento 2 products randomly or rotate the product order.
A truly random Magento 2 sort would, however, destroy the page cache and create duplicates when paging. The module solves both with a rotation window in which the order stays fixed.
For your team this means less manual work: instead of moving positions by hand every week, you set the window and the rules once. Magento 2 random sort then distributes visibility, and the boost rules keep you in control of strategically important products.
Magento 2 random sort with a rotation window
For every window, for example one hour or one day, the module calculates a seed. From it a reproducible shuffle of the products is created. Within the window all visitors see the same order, in the next window a new one. You set the window length per category.
- Reproducible shuffle per time window
- Window length adjustable per category
- Same order for all visitors within the window
Boost rules for Magento 2 random sort
Boost rules give products with certain properties a higher chance of landing in front positions. Typical conditions are an attribute such as new arrival, stock above a threshold or a brand. The boost shifts the probability, it does not fix a position. That keeps the list varied.
- Boost by attribute, stock or brand
- Factor adjustable per rule
- Weighting instead of fixed position
Cache-friendly and stable when paging
Because the order depends only on the window, the page cache stays usable. When the window changes, the cache of the affected categories is invalidated in a targeted way. Sorting, filters and page number work together so a product on page 2 does not appear again. Even with active layered navigation the shuffle stays consistent.
- Cache invalidation on window change
- No duplicates when paging
- Consistent with layered navigation
Activation and default sorting in the admin
Under Stores › Configuration › Mironsoft › Random Sort Boost you enable the module, choose categories and store views and decide whether the rotation becomes the default sorting or appears as its own option in the sort dropdown. The option label is translatable. You can move sold-out products to the end of the list.
- As default sorting or as its own option
- Translatable label
- Sold-out products to the end
Where Magento 2 random sort helps in everyday shopping
Typical situations in which rotation distributes revenue.
Large categories
In categories with hundreds of products even later items get regular visibility.
New arrivals
New products receive a boost and appear far forward more often without blocking permanently.
Overstock
Items with high stock are shown preferentially until the stock level drops.
Returning customers
Visitors who stop by daily see a new selection after each window instead of the same top.
Magento 2 random sort: fixed order versus rotation
What rotation changes in the catalogue.
| Topic | Without the module | With Mironsoft Random Sort Boost |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Always the same first products | Rotation across the whole catalogue |
| Paging | Stable but rigid | Stable within the window |
| Weighting | Manual position only | Boost rules by attribute and stock |
| Cache | Fully usable | Usable thanks to the rotation window |
| Sold out | As sorted | Optionally at the end of the list |

How Magento 2 random sort differs from merchandising rules
Merchandising rules set fixed positions and pins for individual products. Magento 2 random sort, by contrast, rotates the order and only weights through probabilities. Both approaches can be combined: pins stay in place while the rest rotates.
The module uses Alpine.js in the Hyvä theme and loads no additional library.
No download, but a personal setup
Random Sort Boost is not listed here as a ready-made download for self-installation. The purchase is an engagement: we contact you after the purchase, install the module in your shop and agree on categories, window length and boost rules together with you.
