Magento 2 Merchandising Rules: the right products on top, without manual work
With the Mironsoft Magento 2 merchandising rules you define the order of your category pages by clear criteria. Margin, stock level, newness, sales and discount each get a weight, and every product receives a score. Promotional items can additionally be pinned to fixed slots. The order is calculated in advance, so the category page loads just as fast as before. The module needs no JavaScript, the sorting is created server-side in the Hyvä theme.
Weighted score
Each criterion gets a value from 0 to 100, and the module adds them up to a ranking.
Margin in focus
A cost price column or an attribute serves as the basis, products with a higher margin move up.
Stock and newness
Sold-out items sink, fresh arrivals rise for an adjustable period.
Pins and blocks
Products can be pinned to position 1 to n or pushed down for one category.
Time windows
Rules apply from to, for example for a promotion week, and fall back automatically afterwards.
Preview
Before saving you see the calculated order including points per criterion.
Why Magento 2 merchandising rules replace manual sorting
In many shops the top spots are whatever was moved by hand last. With 2,000 products that upkeep cannot be sustained. Merchants therefore look for Magento 2 merchandising rules, sorting by margin, or a way to pin products. Magento itself sorts by position, name or price and knows no combined criteria.
Yet the order of a list decides revenue: the top slots receive the largest share of clicks. Whoever fills them with available, profitable and current goods improves earnings without raising traffic.
Create Magento 2 merchandising rules: criteria and weights
A rule applies to one or more categories and defines which criteria count and how strongly. Example: 40 percent margin, 30 percent sales of the last 30 days, 20 percent newness, 10 percent stock level. Subcategories inherit the rule but can receive their own weighting. Products without a cost price receive a neutral margin value so that they are not penalised.
- Several criteria with weighting in percent
- Inheritance to subcategories with override
- Neutral value for missing data, no penalty
Pins, blocks and exceptions in Magento 2 merchandising rules
Besides the score there are hard specifications. A pin puts a product on a fixed slot, valid for a period and a category. A block pushes products to the end, such as remaining stock. Sold-out items can be placed at the end automatically. In case of conflict the order is pin before block before score. That keeps it clear why a product sits where it does.
- Pins with slot number and period
- Block and automatic lowering of sold-out items
- Fixed ranking: pin before block before score
Calculation by cron: fast category pages despite Magento 2 merchandising rules
The score is not calculated on every page view. A cron job or a manual run writes the result to a table of its own, which the “Recommended” sort order reads. You set the interval; for large catalogues a nightly calculation is enough. The frontend reads just one number per product and the page stays in the full page cache. After a rule change you trigger the recalculation in the admin with one click.
- Result in a dedicated table, no calculating on page view
- Interval and manual run in the admin
- Full page cache stays intact
Preview and explanation: why is this product on top?
The preview shows, for a category, the order that your rule would create and, for every product, the points per criterion. You see at once whether a heavily weighted criterion dominates the list. A comparison with the current order marks climbers and fallers. Only after saving does the rule become active. Everyday work turns into steering instead of guessing.
- Preview per category with points per criterion
- Comparison with the current order
- Rule active only after saving
Where Magento 2 merchandising rules help in daily shop work
Typical situations where Magento 2 merchandising rules determine the earnings.
Margin to the top
Products with a high margin get more weight, available items move forward and the contribution margin rises without new visitors.
Seasonal change
In spring garden items rise automatically, in autumn they sink again. Time windows spare you the manual rearranging.
Promotion week
A pin sets the promotional goods to slots 1 to 4 and releases the slots after expiry.
Catalogue upkeep with many products
With thousands of items a rule set maintains what no team can sort by hand every day.

| Promotional goods | Move by hand and reset afterwards | Pin with period, released automatically |
| Sold-out items | Stay on top and frustrate customers | Lowered automatically |
| Control | Result visible only in the frontend | Preview with points per criterion |
| Upkeep effort | High and error-prone | Create the rule set once, cron does the work |

How it differs from bestseller sorting, out-of-stock-last and hand-picked products
The Mironsoft bestseller sorting uses sales figures only. “Out of stock last” moves only unavailable items, and the hand-picked products are a manual selection. Magento 2 merchandising rules combine these approaches and add margin, newness, time windows and a preview.
All modules can be combined. The sorting is created server-side, so in the Hyvä theme neither jQuery nor an extra library is needed. Preferred placement of your own products can trigger labelling duties under competition law; the review lies with the shop owner.
No download, but personal setup
