6 Features

Magento 2 Menu Badges: show promotions and new arrivals right in the main menu

With Magento 2 Menu Badges you attach small labels such as New, Sale or Trending directly to a menu item. Visitors see in the navigation where a click pays off and do not have to find your promotions through the home page first. You maintain text, colour and date range per category in the admin, and the result appears in the desktop and the mobile menu. The module runs on Alpine.js in the Hyvä theme and needs no additional library.

Badge per category

New, Sale, Trending or your own text right on the category menu item.

Colour and shape

Choose background, text colour and rounding from templates or define them freely.

Date range

A badge appears when the promotion starts and disappears by itself after the end date.

Highlighting

Single menu entries get an accent colour, bold type or a subtle background.

Desktop and mobile

The same label in the mega menu and in the collapsible mobile menu.

Language per store view

The badge text applies per store view, so New and Neu never get mixed up.

Why menu badges

Why merchants use Magento 2 Menu Badges in the main menu

The main menu is the most read area of any shop. Leaving a running promotion out of it wastes attention. Merchants therefore search for Magento 2 Menu Badges, for a New label in the menu or for a way to highlight a category. Out of the box Magento offers no field for this, and workarounds through the category name break the URL, the breadcrumb and search results.

With Magento 2 Menu Badges the category name stays clean and the label lives in its own attribute next to it. You switch promotions in the admin without touching a template or layout, and visitors see at once in the navigation what is new.

01Create a badge

Maintain Magento 2 Menu Badges per category in the admin

Magento 2 Menu Badges add a section for the badge. You enter text, template and colour there and save as usual. The badge text is kept short so the menu does not wrap; a length limit warns about entries that are too long. Without an entry nothing is shown, and existing categories stay unchanged.

  • Text, template and colour right in the category
  • Short texts with a warning for overlong entries
  • Empty fields leave the menu unchanged

02Scheduling

Set the promotion period for menu badges

With the fields Valid from and Valid to a badge runs for exactly the length of a promotion. Before the start the menu stays unchanged, after the end the label is no longer rendered. Because the menu is cached, a cron job clears the affected cache at the right moment, so no manual flushing is needed.

  • Start and end date per badge
  • Automatic cache cleanup at the switch
  • No manual flush after a promotion ends
03Highlighting

Highlight menu items instead of only labelling them

Besides Magento 2 Menu Badges the menu item itself can be highlighted: an accent colour for the text, heavier type or a light background. This suits categories that are permanently in focus, such as your bestsellers. The mobile menu uses the same look so desktop and smartphone do not drift apart.

  • Accent colour, font weight or background
  • Same look in the mobile menu
  • Optionally apply to subcategories

04Accessibility and cache

Deliver menu badges accessibly and cache-friendly

Every badge carries a hidden helper text that screen readers announce, for example category offers, promotion. The output sits in the existing menu cache, and changes invalidate only the affected entries. Load time stays the same, and the module works without additional JavaScript.

  • Hidden helper text for screen readers
  • Only affected cache entries are invalidated
  • No additional JavaScript
Use cases

Where Magento 2 Menu Badges help in everyday shop work

Typical situations in which a small label in the menu does more than a banner.

Seasonal promotions

For Black Friday, summer sale or the Christmas season the category gets, through Magento 2 Menu Badges, a Sale badge for the promotion period and loses it by itself afterwards.

Announce new arrivals

New collections or product lines carry, via Magento 2 Menu Badges, a New badge while they are fresh in the range. Regular customers find them without a detour.

Multilingual shops

Each store view has its own text, for example Neu in German and New in English, with the same colour template.

Permanent focus areas

Categories with a high margin or strong sales are highlighted permanently with Magento 2 Menu Badges without changing the category name.

Scope

Scope compared with mega menu, product labels and header notice

Menu structure and banner areas in the mega menu are not part of this module; it only labels existing entries. Product labels in listings and header notices have their own modules. Magento 2 Menu Badges live exclusively in the navigation.

All modules can be combined. The output uses Alpine.js in the Hyvä theme, without an additional library.
