Magento 2 Image Sitemap: bring your images to Google in a targeted way
With the Mironsoft Magento 2 Image Sitemap you create a dedicated sitemap file listing your product, category and CMS images for search engines. Generation runs in the background by cron, filters out placeholders and unwanted images and splits large catalogs into several files automatically. The sitemap is added to the robots.txt. The module works in the backend and is independent of the theme, so it runs with Hyvä without adjustment. A Magento 2 Image Sitemap can be configured per store view.
Product images
Base image, gallery or both, depending on settings and with disabled images excluded.
CMS and categories
Images from CMS pages, blocks and categories appear with the page on which they are visible.
Filters
Placeholders, “hide from product page” images and single products or categories can be excluded.
Splitting
Large sitemaps are split into files with an index so limits are never exceeded.
Cron generation
Newly built files replace the old ones only after the run succeeded.
robots.txt entry
The sitemap is announced automatically, without maintaining the file by hand.
Why a dedicated image sitemap pays off
Many shops receive relevant traffic from image search, especially for products people want to look at first. For Google to find your images they have to be crawled, and galleries with scripts or lazy loading do not always make that reliable. A sitemap names the image URLs directly. That is why merchants look for a Magento 2 Image Sitemap.
The standard Magento sitemap mainly covers products and offers few filters. Images from CMS pages or categories are missing, and placeholders sometimes end up in the list. The Magento 2 Image Sitemap closes these gaps and stays lean.
Product, category and CMS images in one Magento 2 Image Sitemap
You choose which image sources are included. For products you take only the base image or the whole gallery, variants can inherit the image of the parent product. Categories supply their image, CMS pages and blocks the images embedded in the content. Each image is assigned to the URL of the page it appears on, with an absolute media URL.
- Base image, gallery or both
- Category images and images in CMS content
- Absolute media URL per store view
Filters against placeholders, hidden images and exclusions
A sitemap should name only images that visitors really see. The module skips placeholder images and images marked as hidden in the gallery. In addition you exclude products, categories or CMS pages, for example test pages and noindex pages. Pages blocked for search engines do not appear in the file.
- Skip placeholders and hidden images
- Exclude products, categories, CMS pages
- noindex pages are not included
Cron, splitting and robots.txt for a large Magento 2 Image Sitemap
Files are built by cron at a time of your choice. The module writes to a temporary file first and replaces the existing one only after a successful run, so a half-finished sitemap is never online. If a file exceeds the limits for entries or file size, further files with an index are created automatically. The index is added to the robots.txt.
- Cron time and interval adjustable
- Replace only after a successful run
- Automatic splitting with index file
Log, manual run and check in the admin
In the admin you see the last run per store view with duration, files and number of images. You start a manual run with a button or via CLI, which is handy after large imports. A check report lists images whose file is missing on the server, so you find dead references before Google does.
- Log per store view
- Manual run via admin or CLI
- Report on missing image files
Where a Magento 2 Image Sitemap helps in daily business
Typical situations in which a Magento 2 Image Sitemap brings visibility.
Visual ranges
Furniture, fashion or decor live on images. The sitemap helps galleries to be captured completely.
Large catalogs
With tens of thousands of images the module splits the files and keeps limits.
Content pages and blog images
Images from CMS pages, guides and category texts also make it into the file.
Several store views
Each language gets its own files with media URLs and page URLs of its domain.
Magento 2 Image Sitemap: without and with the module
The difference from the standard sitemap.
| Topic | Without the module | With Mironsoft Image Sitemap |
|---|---|---|
| Sources | Mainly products | Products, categories, CMS pages and blocks |
| Filters | Hardly any, placeholders possible | Placeholders, hidden images, noindex, exclusions |
| Large inventories | One file, limits reached quickly | Automatic splitting with index |
| Safety | Partially written file possible | Replace only after a successful run |
| Checking | No feedback on dead images | Report on missing image files |

Scope compared with the standard sitemap and the HTML sitemap
The sitemap function of Magento and the HTML sitemap by Mironsoft stay untouched. The Magento 2 Image Sitemap adds a dedicated XML file that names only image URLs with their pages. SEO markup and hreflang are independent of it.
All modules can be combined. Your existing sitemap configuration does not have to change for that.
No download — personal setup instead
Image Sitemap is not listed here as a ready-made download file for self-installation. The purchase is a service commission: we get in touch after the purchase, install the module in your shop and agree on sources, filters and cron time together with you.
