Magento 2 category images: one picture for banner, tile, menu and mobile
Magento 2 stores exactly one image per category. That single picture then has to serve as a wide banner, as a small tile in the grid and perhaps in the mega menu. The result is distorted crops, oversized files on smartphones and alt texts that consist of nothing but the file name. This is where Mironsoft's Magento 2 category images come in.
Mironsoft Category Images is a Magento 2 extension for Hyvä shops. It offers four named image slots per category, editable alt texts per store view and a responsive output. Mironsoft sets the module up in your shop and connects it to your templates.
Features of the Magento 2 category images at a glance
More than one image per category: with Magento 2 category images every use gets its own, properly cropped picture, without your team maintaining files twice.
Four image slots
Banner, mobile banner, thumbnail and menu image are uploaded separately.
Alt text per store view
Alt text and title per image and language instead of a file name as a substitute.
Responsive output
A picture element serves the portrait crop on phones and the wide banner on desktop.
Fast loading
WebP variants, lazy loading and fetchpriority=high on the banner for a good LCP.
Fallback chain
If the mobile image is missing the banner is used, if that is missing the category's default image.
ViewModel for templates
Menus, tiles and sliders fetch the Magento 2 category images with a single call, without custom database logic.
Magento 2 category images in the category form: four image slots instead of one
The category form gets an “Images” section with four upload fields. The banner is meant for the top area of the category page, the mobile banner for narrow screens, the thumbnail for tile and slider views and the menu image for the mega menu. Alt text and title can be stored for each image.
- Drag & drop upload with a preview in the form
- Alt text and title per image and store view
- Unused slots simply stay empty
Responsive Magento 2 category images with WebP, lazy loading and a good LCP
The module outputs the images as a picture element with breakpoints and creates the required sizes and WebP variants through Magento's image processing. The banner receives fetchpriority=high while all other images load lazily. Width and height are part of the markup so the page does not jump while loading.
- Breakpoints and target sizes configurable
- Lazy loading for thumbnail and menu image, banner loaded with priority
- Fixed aspect ratios against layout shift
Fallback chain for Magento 2 category images: never an empty slot
If an image slot is empty, the module walks through a defined chain: the next matching slot first, then the category's default image, finally a placeholder or nothing, depending on the setting. When an image is replaced or a category is deleted, the module also removes the generated sizes from the cache folder.
- Fallback order configurable per slot
- Optional placeholder instead of an empty area
- Generated sizes are cleaned up on replace and delete
Using Magento 2 category images in menus, tiles and sliders
Custom templates fetch an image with a single call, for example for the mega menu, a category tile overview or a slider. Existing modules for subcategory tiles or sliders can be switched to the new image slots. We handle the mapping together with you during setup.
- The same image everywhere, maintained only once
- Alt text arrives automatically in the matching language
- No change to the Hyvä block system required
Use cases: when several category images pay off
Fashion and lifestyle
Large mood images as banners, narrow portrait crops for smartphones and calm cut-outs as tiles in the grid.
Tools and technology
Factual banners for the category page and icons or detail shots in the mega menu that stay legible at small size.
Multilingual shops
Alt texts per store view: the Magento 2 category images of the German shop describe the motif in German, those of the English shop in English, using the same picture.
Promotions and seasons
For a season you only swap the banner of a category. Tile and menu image can stay unchanged if you wish.
Standard category image vs. Magento 2 category images with the module
This is how the single Magento image and the extension differ in daily work.
| Criterion | Without the module | With the module |
|---|---|---|
| Images per category | One | Four named image slots |
| Mobile view | Same image as on desktop | Dedicated portrait banner |
| Alt text | Not maintainable per image | Per image and store view |
| Load time | One large image for all devices | Suitable size and WebP per device |
| Missing image | Empty area | Fallback chain with default image |
| Use in menus and tiles | Custom solutions needed | One ViewModel for all templates |

Accessibility and image rights for category images
Alt texts matter for accessibility and help search engines understand the motif. With the module they can be maintained per image and language. Whether you hold the necessary usage rights for an uploaded picture remains your responsibility. The module stores images exclusively on your own server and integrates no third-party services, so no visitor data is transmitted to third parties.
No download — personal setup instead
