OPTICS & EYEWEAR Magento for opticians

Magento Shop for Opticians: E-Commerce for Glasses & Contact Lenses

Nobody buys glasses the way they buy a T-shirt: prescription, cylinder value, fit, insurance reimbursement – questions a standard checkout simply doesn't answer. And yet more and more people buy their glasses or contact lenses online. With Magento and Hyvä we build shops for opticians that solve prescription upload, virtual try-on, and insurance billing at a technical level – without losing the depth of consultation this product needs.

Glasses are a trust purchase with a medical component: the prescription, cylinder value, and axis have to be right, the frame has to fit, and at the end of it you need to actually see well. And yet more and more customers buy their glasses online – as long as the shop asks the right questions at the right moment.

This page covers the technical building blocks an optician's online shop really needs – from prescription upload through virtual try-on to insurance billing – and why Magento with a fast Hyvä frontend is the right foundation for it.

01

Why Magento & Hyvä for opticians

Glasses and contact lenses are among the most explanation-heavy products sold online – and the online share keeps growing anyway. Customers research frames on their phone, compare prices, check what their insurance covers, and still want to be confident the glasses will actually fit at the end of it.

Magento brings the data depth this process needs: custom form fields for prescription values, clean integration of consultation appointments, flexible checkout extensions. A Hyvä frontend keeps the shop fast enough that the online consultation never gets stuck behind a loading spinner.

Consultation despite the online shift

Even as online buying grows, a prescription remains a sensitive data point. A shop that offers clean forms, clear guidance, and fast load times earns the trust an anonymous marketplace never builds.

02

Prescription upload in checkout

No prescription, no glasses. The order process needs to offer either a structured form for sphere, cylinder, axis, and pupillary distance, or allow uploading a photo of the prescription – ideally both, depending on what the customer has to hand.

Upload a prescription photo directly

A photo of the optometrist's or ophthalmologist's prescription is attached as a file upload on the product or in checkout – far more convenient than transcribing values by hand.

Values form per eye

Sphere, cylinder, axis, and pupillary distance captured separately for the left and right eye as their own form fields – stored as structured data instead of a free-text note on the order.

Validation before checkout completes

If the prescription is missing or a value looks implausible, checkout flags it right away – instead of an order reaching the lab lab without usable prescription data. Since this involves health data, we pay particular attention to technical security for both transmission and storage.

03

Virtual try-on (AR)

"Does this frame suit me?" is the decisive purchase hurdle for glasses – and the hardest one to answer online. Try-on technology that projects a frame onto your own face via the camera is therefore becoming an increasingly important building block for glasses retailers.

Try-on via webcam or smartphone

The camera detects face shape and position, the frame is overlaid in real time – embedded as an external widget on the product page without slowing down the Magento frontend.

3D frame data as a product attribute

For try-on to work, every frame needs a 3D model or matching reference data. This is maintained as its own media attribute on the Magento product and synced with the try-on provider.

A growing trend, cleanly integrated

AR try-on is no longer a niche feature but an expectation for many customers. We connect specialized try-on providers to Magento via API rather than reinventing that wheel ourselves.

04

Insurance reimbursement & billing

For certain prescriptions or for children, health insurers often contribute toward the cost of corrective eyewear. Customers expect the optician's shop to know this process – not to have to negotiate it with their insurer on their own.

Technically that means an order process that captures the prescription, generates correct invoice documents with the details insurers require, and – where needed – prepares submission to the insurer. This is custom development built on Magento's order and document logic, anchored cleanly in checkout rather than handled off to the side on paper.

Invoices that meet insurer requirements

Reimbursable amounts and the customer's share shown separately, with the correct service description – held as an invoice template in Magento instead of reworked manually on every order.

05

Consultation despite online buying

Glasses remain a consultation-heavy product, even when the purchase happens online. A shop with no way to ask a question feels off for a health product. The fix isn't to discourage online buying – it's to offer consultation digitally.

Live chat for prescription questions

Uncertainty about filling in prescription values is the single most common reason for abandoning checkout. A live chat right next to the form catches that doubt in the moment it happens.

Appointment booking for the store

Customers who order online but want the final fitting done in person book a time slot at their nearest store directly in the shop – instead of calling in and asking for an open slot.

Video consultation as an add-on

For customers without a nearby store, a video consultation slot can be embedded into the order process via an integration – before or after purchase, depending on the use case.

06

Return & fit guarantee

Glasses have to fit – literally. That's exactly why return and fit guarantees aren't a nice-to-have for this product but a precondition for the purchase decision. These promises need to be visible in the shop, not buried in the terms and conditions.

Trust badge right in checkout

The return window and fit guarantee are shown as a badge on the product page and cart – where the doubt actually arises, not tucked away on a separate info page.

Free re-adjustment

If the frame doesn't sit quite right, an in-store re-adjustment is tracked as a fixed part of the order – its own order status, not a case-by-case goodwill decision.

Clearly communicated return window

Instead of relying on the statutory minimum as the only information given, the shop states a specific, generous window – written in plain language, with a clear return process rather than fine print.

For almost no other online product does willingness to buy hinge as strongly on the return guarantee as it does for glasses: someone unsure whether a frame will actually suit their face only buys if a free way back is clearly promised. A visible, easy-to-understand guarantee is therefore not a cost item but a conversion lever – provided the actual return process in the shop is just as smooth as the promise behind it.

07

SEO & local visibility

"buy glasses online with insurance coverage", "progressive lenses trial pair", "optician near me appointment" – optician search queries mix local intent with very specific product and service questions. Anyone running stores alongside an online shop needs both: technically clean product SEO and local visibility per location. Details in our guide to Magento SEO. We bring the same Magento depth to this as to any other project – built through Magento webshop development and the same radical price transparency: a 30 EUR hourly rate, no hidden flat fees.

Frequently asked questions about the Magento shop for opticians

How is the prescription captured during checkout?

Through a structured form for sphere, cylinder, axis, and pupillary distance per eye, or by uploading a photo of the prescription. Both paths can be combined in Magento, including validation before checkout completes.

Can virtual try-on (AR) be integrated into Magento?

Yes. Specialized try-on providers can be connected to the product page via API, while 3D frame data is maintained as a media attribute on the Magento product. The shop itself stays just as fast as it would without the extension.

Can the shop handle insurance reimbursement?

Yes, through a custom extension of the order and invoice logic: capturing the prescription, generating correct invoice documents with the details insurers require, and optionally preparing submission.

What does building an optician shop cost?

It depends heavily on whether prescription upload, try-on integration, or insurance billing are needed. We calculate transparently at our 30 EUR hourly rate, either as a fixed price or with a cap.

How important is a return guarantee for selling glasses online?

Very important. Since fit can only be judged to a limited degree online, a clearly visible return and fit guarantee is often decisive for the purchase decision – ideally shown directly on the product page and in the cart.
